- showed paintings for the first time in ages
- created amusing Halloween spectacle
- hosted two haiku battles
- did a lousy Three Day Novel, but the template is interesting
- met some wonderful people who have helped me grow in many ways
- project Do What Scares Me ix going well, & i might write up a proper report
- actually learning how to do guitar solos, a tiny bit
- straightened out the main floor of the house - more storage, clearing junk, etc.
- figured out basic goals for 2012, and will be making detailed lists over the next few weeks
- i am extremely grateful for my amazing husbands, family & friends.

Last night I saw The Black Dub at The Opera House. Amazing band, amazing music, packed attentive crowd. I became thoroughly lost in the moment. Yet at some point I felt chilly goosebumps when Trixie was singing - the last time I saw her father Chris Whitley before he passed was on the same stage, standing in the same place. She moves in the same twitching, snaky way. Eerie.

I tried not to think about it, just falling into the waves of her unusual soaring voice. But then she picked up a guitar for one song. Chills. She plays so much like a slightly toned down version of her father - liquid left hand, attacking with the right, the jerky right shoulder and twitch-leaning into the mic - it was downright spooky. Yet reassuring that his musical legacy lives on in her, and that his talent has been passed along, not disappeared.

It got me thinking on the subway this morning. How much have I assimilated from my parents? How much do I not even realize I have absorbed? I like to make things, construct things, design better, more efficient, and different things... this comes from my father. Sometimes I am super perky and overly concerned about everyone's health, which is my mother. I wonder what else there is. Since my dad is no longer here there is no way of studying him to look for clues, and my mother lives quite far away so I don't see her very often.

Puzzles. Questions. Hmmm. Interesting.

the calm before the storm

actually, it is the calm before many storms. taking a little walk before the imminent rain to pick up wine for sunday's picnic. fresh air then much rest before saturday's guitar practice then pub crawl. how i got talked into throwing a Bridesmaidmania this year I shall never know. but it is on & going to be spectacular!!! then, as soon as i recover & return to day job, i have a ton of regular work plus freelance work waiting for me. also, the band has gigs on the 9th, 15th, 16th. hoping to crank out a new song but we'll see. after that round of gigs we need to have a Toronto show lined up, & a ton of work needs to be done on the house. the tree in the backyard might have a disease. good grief.

so... june was crazy. july potentially even more so.

i am far behind on sitting on patios with wonderful people & wine... don't worry - that will be a Priority Action Item very soon!

my life is so weird

Who would have thought that I'd end up wearing foofy cocktail dresses & prancing in public, on a stage, while singing hilarious dirty lyrics & playing guitar? Yeah, it's been a few years, I know. But still, if I stop to think about it for more than 2 seconds, it trips me out. (Sidenote - i've found that I can only play drums if I do NOT think about what I'm doing. What does that mean?) My life has taken a turn for the awesome & i'm spastically happy. Also, as you may have noticed, I'm just totally spazzy.

I shop for costumes, not clothing. I paint my face instead of canvas. I listen to so many live bands my head spins. I meet the most incredible, inspiring, amazing people. I hear the best stories. I write notes & ideas on every surface. My purse is bursting with scribbles that might become songs someday. This spring & summer the band is going to become the insane spectacle of insanity that we've been preparing for.

Y'all have been warned. Shit is about to get mega crazy fun. I hope that you'll join us for the ride.

i've been feeling really strange lately.

some of it is due to severe stress whiplash. my body can NOT handle surprise stress, and every two or three weeks this year i've been getting a whammy.

some of it is due to shrinking, and my body not being where i left it. it's great, but it's also totally strange. i feel awkward and a little chilly. every time someone looks at me for more than a second i get fidgety.

some of it is due to the underlying murky unformed realization that this is going to be a very important year.

i'm transforming somehow, but i don't know what i'm becoming. i'm unfocused and ill at ease. and... wondering.

on the other hand, i'm having a brilliantly fantastic time with a bunch of great humans, so really i'm absolutely great.

I'm am so stoked... it's totally weird that this will be High Heels Lo Fi's 14th show of 2010. We've been "gettin around" a little more - London, Kingston, Burlington, Ottawa. Haven't played Toronto in 2 months. Where does the time go? Blazes.

Cannot wait to drop the new song... for something that started as a joke it's actually turning out fairly kick-ass. Wait, that's ALL of our songs, isn't it? Sweet.

I've got boots with flames, a cowboy hat, and a hankering for Jack&Ginger. See you at Rancho Relaxo, 300 College, Sat.Nov4 at 10pm sharp. Then the second we're done, stick with us to hit the bar & bounce for the next 2 bands - they're awesome & we're going to party until we fall-down-go-boom.

A leaf fell today

I haven't walked on the beach yet this summer. Haven't had a chance. It's been a weird whirlwind of other people's projects & activities, & I've sort of been swept along into them.

This weekend my band has a show, and it's also the 3-day Novel contest. I did it 10 years in a row, then took some time off. This year competing as a team, with an interesting plot based (instead of introspective meandering) plotline. I'm quite excited to see what we come up with

Birthday planning, thanksgiving plans, it's fall already. It always comes so quickly. Going to attempt to spend a few lazy afternoons on patios before sweaters are dug out.

The rose of sharon is showing a second round of flowers in the backyard, so there's still some summer left...

epic & long, trying to remember

just moved in to new apartment, and decorating as i was finding out where everything was. washing machine was in the kitchen, and drained into kitchen sink. but dryer was in another room. painting sitting room light gray and accenting with bright green and teal. bedroom was a warm soft gray and bits of hot pink. i think amanda was helping me paint at one point. there were many other rooms i'd keep accidentally finding. there were four stovetops, each with 4 burners but smaller than the last, and they were on shelves over top one another. there were weird shelves everywhere... tons of storage. and many coloured glass knickknacks.

the party was a networking event of some type, and took place around 5 the afternoon we moved in. i still hadn't been outside to see the amazing glass wraparound balcony.

my mother was there, with a light gray greyhound. she was trying to imply that the dog was staying here, and i told her hell no - i'm allergic, remember? and i'm not living in a place with a big dog, they freak me out & terrify me. why don't you remember that?

found a small back room with a warm brown cork floor and a bathtub and water pipes and hoses. maybe i could use this as a painting room? there was no sink, but i could have used the tub. there were burnt-orange towels & face cloths. the scientists there were afraid i'd overheard something secret and wanted me to get out. wrapped a towel around my head at one point.

near the entrance of this sprawling apartment was a series of doors... the elevator area was sort of inside our apartment, and led to two others. needed a pass card to travel around the building. did my aunts leave me a card? wanted to check make sure it worked. aunts from sabrina the witch - they were putting protection spells on the doors.

i checked out another part of the building, but read my door number wrong and ended up on floor 700 and something. the lobby area was all deep peach and mocha, with soft white trim. i was walking barefoot along pathways that felt like sculptured sand. white sculpturework everywhere. looking up was like looking into the future of roman antiques. gigantic and glorious. nice older gentleman saw that i looked lost and explained the numbering system. i was way down on floor 70-3049 so that's why my floor, which was ridiculously grand, wasn't nearly as grand as floor 700. imagine what the penthouse would look like!

i settled into the bench in the elevator, which was more like sitting on stair steps. very scared, tried to shut eyes and stay calm, since i'm sure my aunts put safety spells on this place and it was likely a magical elevator anyway. it travelled sideways for a while, then descended, first slowly then at ludicrous speed.

i made it back to my apartment, and finally out to check the balcony. it was the beach, filled with people. everyone had pillows and blankets and had staked out a lounge area for themselves. who's that gordon something-something guy from third rock & inception? he was a friend of mine, he was there. i was smoking in the gorgeous sunshine and trying not to let ashes fall onto anyone's pillow.

it couldn't have been a real beach - it was still inside the building. it was canned sunshine, but it almost felt real.

that i'm this tired. completely content to sit around for three days straight.
i mean, i'm reading, typing up lyric fragments, practicing guitar... but i really need these three straight days of rest. i've been looking forward to this loafing for weeks and it's gotten me through another busy spell.

i have such a frantic life most of the time that i need complete loafdom to balance it. sometimes there is a happy medium, but sometimes not.

in other news, i'm completely psyched to take on this year's Three Day Novel contest with a partner and write as a duo. also excited about new songs, and recording another EP hopefully end of August.

the guitar practice is going well. if you had told me just 3 & a half years ago (when i picked up the guitar for the first time ever) that i'd be learning classic rock riffs, i'd have laughed in your face. but man... hours of practice really do work. heh heh.

more gardening!

friday victoria came over for a cocktail & to dig up a bunch of shade loving plants from the back jungle to fill in her shady front yard. hope that most of it transplants well!

today, after a lovely lunch with the in-laws, we stopped at a garden centre & found scotch moss and irish moss. since i'm part scottish & part irish, they're both now planted in the back and they had better get along! also planted some weird silvery groundcover in one corner, and the thyme will have to wait until tomorrow night, along with transplanting lots of creeping jenny to a new spot. ripped out a ton of goutweed. going to be a long process. i'll have to clear a path for the new groundcovers weekly, and keep transplanting things. hopefully this summer will be a turning point for the jungle, if i can put in at least 2 hours a week.

the front garden is still doing well - the iris is done, but the huge orange lily should be due to bloom in a week or two. everything else is cruising along well, and there are lots of flowers. it's a big happy mess of interesting things.

mother in law brought us a layered planter thingy full of at least 8 types of herbs. combined with what i already have, the patio is officially an herb & salad garden! the oregano-rosemary-basil risotto tonight shall be epic. what does purple basil taste like? we'll like test drive that later this week.

life update!

gardening! planted hens & chicks, coleous (sp?) & some little red thingys in the front garden, and a bunch of creeping jenny & other vines over the rotted wooden beam. hopefully it will thicken up & diguise the beam & we can wait until next year to replace it. picked up a whack of herbs, salad greens & peppers for a patio garden - that's the spot that gets the most sun, and is right by the kitchen door, so that's handy. yesterday we cleared a lot of branches, bamboo, sumac, and who knows what from the back jungle, and you can see a path again. keen. much more to do - going to be a busy june.

the band! our show thursday was fantastic, and i actually felt really comfy singing... i'm always better when i'm barefoot & have a bunch of great friends in the crowd. our next gig is june 20th at buddies in bad times, and it's going to be a huge event - we're opening for The Ruby Spirit (formerly Sadie May Crash) and there's a whack of burlesque dancers, musicians, and a ton of fun! hoping to get a new original and a new sort-of-cover ready for that one.

work! the day job is crazily busy. holy squid. but the people are logical and reasonable, and during the mega-workload of the past two weeks i've been extremely glad i got the hell out of advertising. busy is fine, psychos are not. cannot deal with both at once. so huzzah for sane people and a good day job!

recreation! we've been watching buffy & angel. (watched the buffy series a few years ago, but not angel. now we're watching both in the order they first aired) it's mellow.

I've never worn my own band t-shirt before, and i know you're not supposed to wear your own shirt because it makes you "that guy" and totally uncool... guess what? i'm uncool. deal with it. i'm a doorknob. you should know that by now.

five big events in april. sorry, six. the whole month is booked up. and may is filling up already too... i *might* have may 2-4 weekend open to rest. woohoo!

cannot believe we're playing a show this weekend. it's a last minute thing, but we're going to test drive some new songs, so that's exciting.

and there are four major events that i haven't even started working on, and need to pick a month for. oh, and a massive new website that is going to be a RIOT. so much excitement! so little time! so little money! so much fun & awesome!

Finally painting again!

I've cleared enough space in the art studio that I can finally paint again. I'm finishing up some pieces that have been hanging around forever, selling old pieces off at a huge discount, and making a lot of sketches for new work.

It's weird... back when I was doing a ton of art shows and won a few awards in 2004 & 2005 for my painting, I saw it as something that could eventually become a retirement income for me. But now I'm not sure. I would really like to sell enough art this summer to clear my credit card. Wonder if that's possible.

I'm excited about my new sketches - have been condensing the elements of my work that seem the most ME and distilling them. This is going to be a very colourful spring. :)

Inspirational Art, My Next Poetry Book

I'm working on a new poetry collection, and I'm floundering on the organization of it. Should it be laid out in the order the poems were written? By subject grouping? By size? I just can't seem to wrangle a system. I keep ending up with trippy abstract "things i think", "things i vent", "stuff i wrote on the subway", etc.

any suggestions? if you read poetry, how do you prefer a book to be laid out & ordered?

i really would like to get this collection finished by mid-summer, and published eventually. (hopefully) but i'm at the point where i need to compile a printed, draft version in order for me to see it properly.

In the past week I've developed several new ideas for paintings, a strange idea for artistic jewellery, finally understood string theory, completed a paperwork jungle & shipped it off, written a new piece for the upcoming poetry collection, helped brainstorm an amazing event coming up this spring, created a new cartoon video, and I'm down to under 120 unopened emails in my main in-box. Plus, High Heels Lo Fi has 3 gigs booked, and 4 or 5 new songs under construction.

This spring is going to be swamped with awesome.

quiet time for the racing brain

for the past few weeks, i've been sinking into a low-energy gray soup of mental blah. perhaps it's the lack of daylight, perhaps it's the constant feeling that i'm behind on everything. perhaps i'm fighting a cold. perhaps i need more iron.

whatever the reason, i'm going to give myself this weekend to loaf completely, and will jump up and kick ass for the week of the 16th through 20th. this is my master plan.

we're currently watching Torchwood, and re-watching Buffy. perfect dark drama to recharge!

Tonight I'm reading poetry at The Art Bar (Clinton's, 8pm), Wednesday is rehearsal, Thursday is a meeting, Friday is a rehearsal then going to a show, Saturday we have a gig in London and come back Sunday afternoon in time to do laundry & clean house for next week.

I'm behind on every single project I'm working on.

If ever I've needed a volunteer personal assistant, it's this month. But that would end up being more work than it takes away. Maybe I could train myself to need less sleep. i had SO much to get done this weekend, but woke up half paralyzed saturday morning with my back wrenched. it takes something like that to get me spending quality time stretching on the floor. sad. was so stoned on painkillers that my legs were heavy and my fingers were hilarious. and then laughing was hilarious. then everything was hilarious.

this saturday the bandlings & i have our first "far enough away that we need to stay over" show. some sort of landmark. i've performed spoken word in London, but music is bigger-better-different. very excited. and amused. and constantly full of glee!!!

just have to get through the two awesome shows this month, then december & january are for songwriting & catching up with the world.

How is that even possible? But here I am at Word on the Street, buying as many books as I can afford / carry.
Fall always makes me assess the year, and the speedily passing life that I'm creepily vaugely near the middle of. It's so weird.
I have a feeling it will be a good, productive fall & winter. Much on the go. Many great plans. Catching up on a few things I'm behind on. Hopefully there will be some quiet weekends curled up with tea & all of the books I'm buying today.

I'm also writing another book of poetry this winter. It's time to turn all of these "half page of scribbled lines" notes into an actual project.

Time for another lap of the magazine section... Can never have enough Canadian books & magazines!

Cannot believe fall has fallen

Due to health issues, I'm not permitted to have any stress until at least New Year. However, when I look at the infinite ToDoList for this fall, it's kind of giving me the willies. As Robert Rankin would say, "it gets the wind up".

I guess my only option is to take the advice I always give others. Make a list. Breathe. Do some of the list. Eat sleep breathe. All you can do is all you can do, right?

Perhaps after our two september shows the band can take a break to work on new material and just chill a bit. Although there is still a LOT of stuff to be done with the new EP... Getting it available online and sending to publishing comapnies and making press kits and getting photos done for that and losing 5 pounds before the photo shoot and I'll have to go shopping and... And...

And this is my brain spiralling out of control again. Just from ONE item on the list.

I've always been this way. Well, for the past 7 years or so, anyway. Can't really see me slowing down, that would be boring. Aye, but pacing myself. There would be the handy dandy trick.

So here I am on a subway, venting. Getting my thoughts in a row.

Weird world, this is.

One thing that is going to be convenient is some Art Bar stuff that will force me to arrive 2 hours early for 4 weeks. This will give me an actual pocket of writing time. Sitting quietly & writing is a total luxury. I am really looking forward to this new poetry collection. It's going to be very eclectic and offbeat, and different than much of my stage stuff. Different is good.

Oh yeah - I have a spoken word performance on october 25th. Details forthcoming. Will be my second reading of the year. Hmmm. Slow year. Slow is good. Mind you, I've had 7 shows with the band, so it all evens out. Even is good. To quote Mark Forward, (hope Meesh reads this!) "it's all about balance".

songwriting weekend & poetry collection & new pens

For ten years, every Labour Day weekend I was immersed in the 3-Day Novel Writing Contest. I completed it every year, whether the novel was 80 pages or 120. Some years SUCKED. A few were good. One was awesome. Every time was a huge learning experience and a soul wrenching trial-by-deadline.

Then I took two years off. one decade was a completion. It was solid. I was good with it.

This year, I have a four day weekend, and am going to concentrate on writing songs. I have lots of housework, a food fair, and movies to watch. But by Monday night I'll have serious progress on some new material done.

It's weird when i'm in songwriting mode. I listen to music on the subway and at work, but I refuse to listen to anything vaguely in our genre. so i listen to piano jazz, lounge, prog rock... The Gene Harris Quartet, Thievery Corporation, Hawkwind. An odd mix of interesting textural stuff that won't get a pop hook in my head.

I do think I'm getting the hang of this songwriting thing. It's not "rocket surgery". Nobody will be injured if I do it wrong. And there is sort of no "wrong" anyway. If it sounds like a song, if it feels complete, then there you go! But I'm really trying to push it... to write hooks, and a catchy chorus, and a good build, and have my limited guitar ability work for me, not against me. (Don't even get me started on how Mandy & Roy forced me to do a "punk guitar solo" at our last gig. jesus murphy.)

I'm also working on some poetry. This winter I want to complete another poetry collection. I don't know whether it will end up as a CD, a zine, a self published chapbook, or if I'd have the guts to write a full book of poetry and send it to actual publishing houses. I've read a lot of the brilliant poetry that comes out in Toronto, and I don't know how my work compares. My poetry tends to come out rambling & conversational. Which is my genuine honest style and I dig it, but might not be "marketable". Whatever. write first, analyze everything to death later.

Plus, it's September. Time for new pens & notebooks! I love buying writing supplies. It's a sickness.

I haven't been blogging much lately. Just random tidbits & funny weblinks or videos that I find. Time for a real update... While I'm on my way to a songwriting date with Miss Mandy. Time is doing extra weird things this summer. Everything is a super rush except for the blissful afternoons of great food, drinks, and conversations with awesome people.
The EP is nearly done - just one more tiny guitar bit then mixing. "Big Dumb Rock Songs" will be available at our show on the 15th. I'm so proud of this project I could bust. I was pretty excited about the first HHLF demo, but the band has totally changed direction over the past few months, and these 5 songs really show what we are now.
But we need some new materials for upcoming gigs, so we'll be crankin out some new tunes this week

I've also been super busy with art bar stuff. There is a lot to be done each week, and I need to overhaul my system so that I don't miss anything. Plus I'm running my yearly theme night on august 18th - the poetic essence of country music. I've booked the most amazing lineup - I'm thrilled that so many wonderful people want to play along!!

What else... Ah yes, I've been painting this weekend for the first time in a while. I've had a comissioned piece on the go that tooka awhile to get crackin because I wa so stupidly stressed out that I couldn't sketch calm. At all. It was freaking me out. I've never had a block like that before. But then, I've never had two big chunks of my hair fall out before, so who know's what's what. But all is truckin now! I think when I get this piece done I might have another clearance sale and try to get rid of every one of my paintings in the house. Clear house, clear mind. Or something :)

In other news, raccoons have ripped open part of the house at the corner of the shed-room. Wtf? We totally have the money to get that fixed. Gak

This Saturday, May 9th, is Last Last Call at The Renaissance Cafe.

i'm ferklmept just thinking about it.

that's where the first HHLF gig was. i've hosted so many shows there. i've performed both spoken word and music there, and shown my paintings. i've hosted the Toronto Tinfoil Hat Contest there. what other venue would let people hold "Kindergarten for 'Grown-Ups'"? HHLF jammed with bass & drums for the first time at the Ren. Mike & i held our 10th anniversary party there, and my 6 month old nephew Jack was bouncing on the bar "dancing". on the day we went on an open house tour and fell in love with our home, we went to the Ren after for a drink & discussion - and when... i think it was Colleen, asked how the house was, i just burst into tears because it was so perfect.
four days later, on the day we bought our house, our agent & the house inspector had to meet somewhere for a quick coffee to go over everything, and even though the Ren was closed, Randy saw us through the front window, let us in and made us coffee.

those couches have heard so many wonderful conversations. that stage has held so much wonder & beauty & honesty & warmth.

i feel like i'm just not producing enough in the way of art.

could it be as simple as the clutter and lack of space holding me back?

i'm going to try this experiment... totally GUT my art room and start over. fresh space for fresh ideas. room for painting, writing, and guitar. will pitch or give away everything else in that room that isn't art supplies or tools that will be used in the next 3 months.

this should be interesting.

also, i need to create more time for sitting on the deck with friends. there is a lack of that. and it's finally the season to come out of hibernation.

Tonight I was jamming in our O.C. Secret pratice location, playing AC/DC. I almost got a little ferklempt for a moment. We rock. I'm in a band, and we rock. We have no delusions about record labels or fame - we know we'll just play some great showsn put out our album, and have a blast. But it's the delicious process! Learning how to make music is the coolest of all things and I'm so honoured to be on this journey with a gang of wonderful freaks.

I'm blissing out over here!!!

my time has been insane lately. or should i say, insaner than usual.

i sometimes realize that i only see my friends at spoken word & music events, never over quiet coffee or in someone's living room. it's weird. but the people i'm close with understand that the art comes first.

even though it's been musical art not visual art lately. i can't remember the last time i painted. i hope to fall back into that soon, as it makes me calm, and i feel the need to post new paintings every few months.

stuff with the band are going fantastic. we're rocking away, getting comfy, have a 40 minute set down, the 4 song demo is selling well, and we recorded a holiday song on saturday. just need to mix & add bells.

i'm losing time by being too busy. when i'm tired, i see a free chunk of time as a chance to rest instead of a chance to get caught up on more things. all i can do is pace myself and keep on chipping away at things.

i also need to write 2 new poems by december first for a chapbook project. good grief. that should be interesting. i'll have to lock myself in a coffee shop until something happens.

i also need to be hitting more open mic nights, and performing my songs solo. it's helping me get over The Fear. slowly but surely, tiny baby steps.

MCS = Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

short version: people with MCS have a glitch that allows more chemicals to leach from the blood to the brain. something just a pinch toxic that doesn't bother normal people at all makes us very ill. (headaches, muscle aches, extreme fatigue, dizziness, asthma attacks, "brain fog" or confusion, hives, blurred vision, etc. )

another interesting note: when an allergic over-reaction like this takes place, your body is flooded with adrenaline and cortisol, which creates the "fight or flight" full body panic reaction. it is unbelievably alarming.

this is why three minutes of exposure to perfume, cologne or other airborne chemicals can sometimes make me sick for five hours or more.

this is why i go out in public less and less.

About a year ago when I was noticing the billions of condos being built on the lakeshore, I thought it sad that only half of the residences have a lake view. I thought, hey - why don't they make a building that rotates a quarter turn every week, so that everyone can share the view?
